United Nations bears direct responsibility in Western Sahara (communiqué)

Madrid, April 23, 2012 (SPS) - Parliamentary Groups “Peace and Freedom for the Saharawi People” has reaffirmed on the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to free expression in accordance with the UN Resolution 1415, pointing, in a communiqué concluded a meeting held end of last week at Basque parliament headquarters, to the direct responsibility of the UN regarding the decolonization of Western Sahara and ensure that the people of Western Sahara express their aspirations and hopes.

The conference was overseen the President of Basque Parliament, Ms. Arantza Quiroga, in the presence of Speaker of the Saharawi National Council, Mr. Khatri Addouh, and a number of POLISARIO representatives in Spain.

In her speech, Ms. Quiroga commended the role played by the Basque PM Txomin Aurrekoetxea in defending the Saharawi people and their just cause during previous stages, expressing thanks to the Groups for the constant efforts to inform the regional and international parliaments about developments of the Saharawi question.

Moreover, director of Basque Agency for Development and Cooperation, Marta Ares, and Secretary-General of the International Jurists Association for the Western Sahara, Felipe Briones Vives, took the floor to speak about contribution of their sectors in the solidarity with the Saharawi people.
