London, April 27, 2012 (SPS) - “UK supports a political solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara,” said the UK Under Secretary of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Mr. Alistair Burt, replying to a question by Lan Lucas, British Labour Party MP.
“I continue to support the UN-led political process to encourage Morocco and the Polisario Front to reach a long-lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara,” added the British diplomat.
He emphasized on the need to “ensure that the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) is able to fulfill its mandated tasks unhindered,” stressing on the importance of fulfilling its obligations towards human rights as provided in the UN Security Council Resolution 1979.” (SPS)
