ACHPR to visit occupied Western Sahara Tuesday to probe Morocco’s human rights violations

Algiers, Sept 24, 2012 (SPS) - The African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) will visit Tuesday the Saharawi occupied territories to investigate the human rights violations committed by Moroccan authorities against the Saharawi citizens, its Chairperson Catherine Dupe Atoki announced Monday.


“After we visited the Saharawi territories, we will head to north of Mali assess the situation of human rights there and collect all the useful information to recommend it to the African Union,” said Ms. Atoki, in a press conference held after a meeting with the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi people (CNASPS).


ACHPR is a quasi-judicial body tasked with promoting and protecting human rights and collective peoples’ rights throughout the African continent as well as interpreting the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and considering individual complaints of violations of the Charter. (SPS)
