Submitted on

New York, Dec 12, 2013 (SPS) - The United Nations General Assembly adopted Wednesday a resolution on Western Sahara’s issue, in which it reasserts its support to the negotiation process “to reach a solution which allows the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self-determination,” while praising the efforts undertaken by the UN Secretary General Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross.

As part of the situation of the 16 non-self governing territories on the UN decolonization list, the general assembly ratified the resolution relating to Western Sahara, examined by the Committee on Decolonization, under the agenda item “the implementation of the declaration on the granting of independence to colonial people and countries.”

The resolution adopted by UN General Assembly had been ratified in October by UN Decolonization Committee.

The terms of the resolution, adopted without a vote, point out that the General Assembly supports the negotiation process to reach a fair, lasting and a mutually accepted political solution enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and praises the efforts undertaken by the UN Secretary General Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Christopher Ross.

Through this resolution, the UN General Assembly said that it thoroughly examined the issue of Western Sahara and reaffirmed the inalienable right of right of all people to self-determination and independence in accordance with the provisions of the UN charter. (SPS)
