British NGO for giving MINURSO the power to monitor human rights

Submitted on

London, April 16, 2014 (SPS) - On the eve of the UN Security Council´s meeting on April 17th, Western Sahara UK Campaign has appealed to the Security Council to fulfill its duty to the Saharawi people, by giving the MINURSO the powers to monitor human rights in Western Sahara.

In a letter addressed to the Security Council of the UN, the British ONG indicated that there are well documented violations of human rights including, torture, false imprisonment and sexual violence perpetrated against Saharawi citizens by Morocco in occupied Western Sahara.

The Campaign noted that the Saharawi people need an “impartial, comprehensive and sustained” monitoring of human rights in Western Sahara, as recommended by the UN Secretary General in his report on Western Sahara.

Given the acceleration of plans for drilling in Western Sahara, the letter requested that the MINURSO be given the power to report on the rights of the Saharawis to access their natural resources, being exploited by Morocco. (SPS)
