New York, April 29, 2014 (SPS) - The Security Council of the United Nations adopted Tuesday a resolution on Western Sahara, in which the Council reiterated his call for a “political, lasting and mutually acceptable” solution providing for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.

Adopted unanimously by the 15-member Security Council, the resolution 2152 (2014) stresses “the importance of improving the human rights situation in Western Sahara,” and encourages the parties “to work with the international community to develop and implement independent and credible measures to ensure full respect for human rights.”

The Council also decided to extend the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 30 April 2015.

The Secretary General of the United Nations Mr. Ban Ki-moon U.N. has called, in his report regarding the situation concerning Western Sahara, for “sustained” human rights monitoring in the territory of Western Sahara, occupied by Morocco since 1975, warning against unfair exploitation of the territory’s natural resources.

He also highlighted that the end goal nevertheless remain a “sustained, independent and impartial” human rights monitoring mechanism to be established in Western Sahara. (SPS)
