Saharawi young people’s situation in occupied territories is “alarming”, says UJSARIO

Geneva, July 9, 2014 (SPS) - Secretary General of the Union of Youth of Sagia el-Hamra and Rio de Oro (UJSARIO) Mr. Zain Mohamed Sid Ahmed underlined in Geneva that the situation of the Saharawi young people in the occupied territories and the Sahrawi refugee camps is “alarming.”

“The feeling to return to war was reinforced among the Sahrawi young people by the absence of any signs of the conflict settlement, 25 years after the ceasefire and the international community’s inability to establish a mechanism to protect human rights in the occupied territories,” said UJSARIO’s secretary general.

In a meeting in Geneva with several players supporting the Saharawi cause, the secretary general called on all the human rights organizations to “urgently intervene to protect the Sahrawi people in the occupied territories from the Moroccan repression.”

He also called for the “release of all the Sahrawi political detainees and the review of the Security Council’s stances regarding the mechanism for human rights protection in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.” (SPS)
