Brussels, Oct 16, 2014 (SPS) - Western Sahara is a non-self-governing territory, said Mr. Štefan FÜLE, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, adding “Morocco is actually an administering authority.”
Responding to a question of MEP on behalf of the European Commission, Mr Füle stressed that according to the UN attitude, Western Sahara is considered a “non-self-governing territory”, highlighting that the Kingdom of Morocco is actually “an administering authority.”
The EU official urged Morocco to comply with the principles of international law regarding the exploitation of natural resources of the non-self-governing territories, which take into account the interests of the people of these territories.
According to Füle, the EU ensures that all its agreements with Morocco are in accordance with international law, whether by specific provisions or other mechanisms discussed by the various bilateral committees as part of the partnership agreement. (SPS)
