Algiers, January 18, 2015 (SPS) -Algeria and Venezuela welcomed the "continuous" commitment of the United Nations (UN) to a "just and lasting" settlement of the conflict in Western Sahara, based on a solution meant to self-determination of the Saharawi people.

The two countries "welcome the continuous commitment of the UN international community for a just and lasting settlement based on a mutually acceptable political solution that will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter and resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council," said a joint statement released Thursday, after the state visit to Algeria by the Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

They ensure "their full support to the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General's personal envoy for Western Sahara (Christopher Ross)."

The two sides stressed, in this regard, "the importance of the protection of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara". (SPS)
