Chahid Al Hafed (refugee camps), Feb 17, 2015 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz, on Monday called on the United Nations to put pressure on the Moroccan regime to create the necessary conditions to organize a referendum on self-determination in Western Sahara.

“The Moroccan presence on the Sahrawi territory is an occupation force, that's why it is incumbent upon the UN, the international legality and the international law to define the actions relating to the Western Sahara issue,” President Mohamed Abdelaziz said at the end of the audience he granted to the UN secretary General’s personal envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross.

The Sahrawi president said that “the discussions with the UN envoy were clear and were an opportunity for the Polisario Front to express its views on the main principles relating to the decolonization of Western Sahara.”

He also reiterated the Polisario Front's readiness to “cooperate with the UN and to support the efforts of Christopher Ross to reach a solution that guarantees the right of Sahrawi people to self-determination, in accordance with the resolutions of the international community.”

“The Sahrawi party also expressed its deep concerns over the human rights violation by the Moroccan government in Western Sahara, despite the presence of the UN political, legal and human rights mechanisms,” added the Sahrawi president.

In this regard, he underlined that the "UN assumes the responsibility of what is happening in the occupied Sahrawi territories," calling this international organization to contribute to the protection of human rights in Western Sahara."
The Sahrawi president also expressed deep concern over Morocco’s policy to involve foreign companies; organizations and investors in the plundering of the natural resources of Western Sahara, regardless of the international law.
