Brussels, March 10, 2015 (SPS) - The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Mrs. Federica Mogherini, said the EU “supports the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to achieve a just, durable and mutually acceptable peace, which provides for the right to self-determination for the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter.”

Responding to written question about her stance on the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people, Mrs. Mogherini underlined that the EU “is closely following the developments in Western Sahara,” expressing concern over the impact of the prolongation of the conflict on the respect for human rights and cooperation in the region.

She added that the European Union supports the Security Council resolution 2152 (2014) concerning the Saharawi issue.

“The EU encourages the parties to reach a negotiated solution to the conflict and praises the efforts of Christopher Ross, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Western Sahara,” she highlighted. (SPS)
