Prime Minister receives prominent US lawyer Gare Alan Smith

 Shaheed Elhafed, March 28, 2015 (SPS) The Prime Minister, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, received Friday, the prominent American lawyer, Gare Alan Smith, who was on a visit to the Saharawi refugee camps.

 

 The Prime Minister praised the efforts of the US attorney for the Saharawi cause during his diplomatic career and through the conferences he hosted during his stay in favor of Saharawi officials.

 

For his part, Mr. Smith pointed out that the legal aspect of the Western Sahara conflict is clear according to the United Nations Charter, which guarantees the right of peoples to self-determination through 65 UN resolutions.

 

 He also recalled that the international community does not recognize Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara.

 

 The American lawyer deplored the suffering of the Saharawi people, adding "there is still hope to do justice to the Saharawi people".

 

 Mr. Smith, who began since Monday with his family a visit to the Saharawi refugee camps, is a former adviser to the US State Department and a supporter of the Saharawi cause since 1989. He maintains permanent relations with the diplomatic mission of the Frente Polisario in Washington.

 

 During his visit the US attorney hosted conferences on the conflict in Western Sahara in its legal and political aspects and held talks with officials of the Polisario Front. He also visited the Sahrawi wilayas and institutions. (SPS)
