POLISARIO will review cooperation with MINURSO if giving up its primary mandate, confirms Khaddad

New York, April 22, 2015 (SPS) - The Saharawi Coordinator with the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Mr. Mhamed Khadad, on Wednesday declared that the Polisario Front would review its cooperation with the MINURSO, if the latter gives up its primary mandate in organizing a free and fair referendum in Western Sahara.

Speaking to Reuters, the Saharawi official said that the Frente Polisario “cannot accept that MINURSO is acting in the territory as if it was Moroccan territory.”

Khadad voiced the POLISARIO’s fear that the United Nations may have abandoned the idea of a referendum under pressure from Morocco, renewing its call that MINURSO should be responsible for monitoring human rights in Western Sahara.

The UN Secretary General underscored, in his 2014 report, the need to review the entire peace process in Western Sahara at the level of UN Security Council, if no progress is achieved. (SPS)
