Submitted on

Abuja, June 3, 2015 (SPS) - President of Zimbabwe and current Chairperson of the African Union (AU), Mr. Robert Mugabe, has called on the United Nations Security Council to take all necessary decisions to resolve the conflict of Western Sahara, demanding “comprehensive review” to the negotiations framework set forth in 2007 in order to hold a referendum to overcome the current stalemate.

In an address delivered on his own behalf by Zimbabwe’s Ambassador in Nigeria Mr. Lovemore Mazemo at Abuja’s International Conference on Western Sahara Decolonization, President Mugabe reiterated support to the appeals launched by the UN Security Council to hold direct negotiations between the parties to the conflict, Morocco and the Polisario Front, without pre-conditions and in a good faith in order to bring about a fair, durable and mutually acceptable political solution, which guarantees the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination in accordance with the objectives and principles of the UN Charter.

The African Union has adopted a wide range of decisions, of which reactivating the Ad-hoc Committee of Heads of State and Government on the conflict in Western Sahara comprising of two heads of state, two from each region, and establishing an International Contact Group for Western Sahara (ICG-WS) so that the Sahrawi issue remains present on the international agenda.

AU also requested the stop of the looting if the Sahrawi natural resources and the rejection of any agreement violate the Sahrawi people sovereignty over their wealth. (SPS)
