Algiers, 28 June 2015 (SPS) - LGIERS- Algeria's contribution in terms of humanitarian aid to Sahrawi refugees is "invaluable," said the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Algiers, Hamdi Bukhari.

"We have witnessed Algeria's very substantial contribution in terms of humanitarian aid to this population. This shows Algeria's commitment towards refugees," Bukhari told APS.

The representative of UNHCR said that Algeria has been a host country since forty years and its contribution shows an "active solidarity towards Sahrawi refugees that nobody can deny."

"We are very grateful to the government and the people of Algeria for their support and their solidarity with refugees, especially the Sahrawi refugees," he added.

Bukhari said that "the UN World Food Programme (WFP) will appeal, with the support of the UNHCR, to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund for the financing of Sahrawi refugees' food needs," adding that the situation is "worrying" in terms of food needs.

In this regard, he said that humanitarian aid needs, excluding foodstuffs, are estimated at US$33 million, adding that only US$10 million are available for 2015. (SPS)
