Algiers, 9 Nov 2015 (SPS) - The urgent holding of a referendum on the self-determination in Western Sahara will put an end to the conflict in these territories, which under Moroccan occupation pleaded Sunday, in Algiers, Jean Ziegler, member of the Advisory Committee to the United Nations Human Rights Council, accusing Morocco of crimes against humanity in these territories.

“The process of decolonisation of Western Sahara must be completed,” underlined Ziegler, in a statement to the APS, on the sidelines of a conference themed “the Cannibal World: What Alternatives for Southern Countries,” held at the national institute of global strategies studies (INESG).

To do so, Ziegler said that “there is a right to self-determination that is enshrined in the United Nations (UN) charter,” recalling that “the Spanish colonization ended in 1975 and immediately, the Moroccan State invaded this territory that it does not own.”

“What we must obtain is the free right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people,” he said.

Ziegler, who is a Suisse Politician and sociologist, added that “Morocco, which annexed Western Sahara by military means of restraint and by torture of political prisoners, committed a crime against humanity.” (SPS)
