Brussels, January 29, 2015 (SPS) - The European United Left warned against the serious situation of human rights in Western Sahara, urging the European Union not to stand idly by in the face of the injustice of the Moroccan occupation, in a press release.

]
"The brutal repression by Moroccan police of peaceful demonstrations in the occupied city of Boujdour and El Aaiun demanding the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination with numerous injuries and arbitrary arrests demonstrates the degradation of human rights in the occupied Western Sahara," declared MP Paloma Lopez Bermejo in a speech to the European parliament on January 25.

MEP stressed that "the EU cannot remain indifferent to this conflict in a neighboring region, but it must ensure respect for international law and the free determination of the Saharawi people."

Ms. Paloma Lopez also recalled the situation of the Saharawi political prisoner and Saharawi journalist Salah Mohamed Ahmed Bambari sentenced to six years in prison by the Moroccan occupying authorities. (SPS)
