26th AU ordinary summit opens in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, 31 January 2015 (SPS) The work of the 26th ordinary summit of the African Union (AU) opened Saturday in Addis Ababa with the participation of fifty heads of state and government including Prime Minister, Abdel Khader Taleb Oumar, representing the President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz.

 

The opening ceremony was marked by a speech by the president of Zimbabwe, the outgoing president of the African Union, Mr. Robert Mugabe in which he presented the results of the activities of the organization during the past year.

 

Following the opening ceremony, it is expected that the presidents and heads of state and government will hold a meeting behind closed doors to endorse the agenda of the summit and the program of work.

 

The two-day summit is held under the theme "2016 African Year of Human Rights with particular focus on the Rights of Women." (SPS)
