Heavy rains and floods cause severe damage to Sahrawi refugee camps

Chahid El-Hafed (Sahrawi Republic) 23 September 2024 (SPS) – The rains that have poured down on the Sahrawi refugee camps have caused significant damage to the infrastructure, resulting in material losses to tents and fragile mud-brick houses, according to reports from SPS on the ground.

Since late August, the Sahrawi refugee camps have been hit by unprecedented rainfall, leading to widespread material damage.

Dakhla camp has been particularly hard-hit, with torrential rains continuing since yesterday, severely affecting the infrastructure and causing flooding. Many homes in the region have been inundated with water.

For several days, civil protection teams and emergency response units have been working in the area, striving to drain water from homes and public spaces. (SPS)
