Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), August 09, 2024 (SPS) - The ministerial meeting of the Fifth Ordinary Session of Specialized Technical Committee on Health, Population, Nutrition and Drug Control kicked off on Thursday, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in the presence of African health ministers as well as experts responsible for the sectors concerned.

The high-level ministerial meeting on the theme “Cultivating Wellness in Africa: Holistic Approaches to Health, Nutrition, Population, Drug Control, Crime Prevention, and Education”, was attended by the Minister of Public Health of the Sahrawi Republic, Mr. Salek Baba Hasanna, accompanied by Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Ethiopia and Head of the Permanent Diplomatic Mission to the African Union, Mr. Laman Abaali,  and Director of Information and Awareness at the Ministry of Public Health, Mr. Hayai Ahmed Baba Hayai.

The meeting was opened with a speech by the African Department of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS), which focused on the utmost importance that the HHS attaches to important topics in the fields of health, population, and nutrition and drug control.

The meeting also witnessed an intervention by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, in which he praised the African efforts made to develop health services on the African continent and to limit the spread of diseases and epidemics.

The high-level ministerial meeting witnessed, on its first day, briefings on several topics such as the African Medicines Agency (AMA), the 2030 roadmap for sustainable response to AIDS, ensuring the strengthening of health systems and security for Africa's development.

It is worth noting that the meeting also included presenting a report on the meeting of experts of the Fifth Ordinary Session of Specialized Technical Committee on Health, Population, Nutrition and Drug Control, in addition to electing a body for the office of the Fifth Ordinary Session.
