Bir Lahlou (Liberated Territories), December 16, 2016 (SPS) - Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali called on the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon to urgently intervene for the release of the Sahrawi political prisoners, notably those of Gdeim Izik group, while Morocco has just been condemned by a UN Committee for torturing the prisoners Ennaama Asfari.
In a message to UN Secretary General on Friday, President Ghali said that “UN’s responsibility includes the release of the Sahrawi political prisoners of Gdeim Izik, Embarek Edaudi, Yahia Mohamed Hafed and all the Sahrawi political prisoners in the Moroccan prisons, as well as the fate of more than 651 Sahrawi missing people and victims of the Moroccan repression.”
“Here is the year 2016 which is drawing to a close with new Moroccan violations through a new play by announcing a civil trial for the prisoners of Geim Izik before the court of a power of an illegal military occupation,” said President Ghali, also Secretary General of the Polisario Front.
Sahrawi president called on UN to the decolonization of Western Sahara and the need for a quick intervention of the United Nations to guarantee the protection of human rights in the occupied territories, regretting that the MINURSO remains the only UN mission without a component for the monitoring of human rights’ situation, like other missions in the world.
He also said that the UN high Commissioner for Human Rights didn’t dispatch any mission to Western Sahara in 2016. (SPS)
