Shaheed El-Hafed (refugee camps), October 24, 2016 (SPS) The Under Secretary-General of the United for Peacekeeping Operations, Hervé Ladsous, met with Minister of National Defence, Abdellah Lehbib, and Secretary of State for Documentation and Security, Ibrahim Ahmed Mahmoud, in Shaheed El-Hafed, Sahrawi refugee camps.
In a statement to the press, Mr. Ladsous said he was aware of the Polisario Front's concerns about the lack of progress in the UN peace process, stressing that the United Nations Secretary-General wishes to make progress in the political settlement of this issue.
Mr. Ladsous indicated that the meeting focused on the situation on the ground in Elguergarat area and the cooperation of the Front Polisario with MINURSO in order to facilitate task in field".
For his part, the Secretary of State for Documentation and Security said the meeting allowed the Saharawi party to remind the United Nations of their obligations towards the Saharawi people's right to self-determination.
He also criticized the inability of the UN to fulfill its commitments and promises to the Saharawi people and its inalienable rights to self-determination and independence.
The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations arrived Sunday, in a second stage, of his visit in the region along with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Kim Boldak.
He will move Monday to the area of Elguergarat to discuss the situation with MINURSO on-site staff. (SPS)
