New York, October 05, 2016 (SPS) - Twenty-five countries, including Algerie will submit, at the UN General Assembly meeting, a draft resolution on Western Sahara, in which they reiterate UN position over this decolonization issue.
The document is to be submitted to the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) on Wednesday at the latest, UN sources close to the case told APS.
The adoption of the draft resolution is expected next week.
The draft resolution "takes up UN clear and major ideas on the settlement of Western Sahara conflict," the sources noted.
It reiterates the member states' support to the decolonization process in Western Sahara, backs the relaunch of negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front, suspended since 2012, and the mediation efforts undertaken by UN secretary general's envoy Christopher Ross.
Uruguay's representative Cristina Carrion said Monday that her country would support the draft resolution to be presented by Algeria and 24 other countries about Western Sahara issue, expressing her country's concerns over Morocco's attempts to dismantle MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara).
On Monday, the delegations of the countries taking part in the Fourth Committee's debate on decolonization expressed a large support to Saharawi people's right to self-determination, calling for the resumption of negotiations between the two parties to the conflict.SPS
