Addis Ababa, April 07, 2016 (SPS) -The Special Envoy of the African Union (AU) to Western Sahara, Mr. Joaquim Chissano, "called on African countries to adopt a united and firm position against the Moroccan intransigence to liberate Western Sahara from colonialism.
In a statement made yesterday before the Council for Peace and Security of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mr. Chissano said "Africa has paid a high price to run the restrictions imposed on the apartheid regime in South Africa and now must make sacrifices for the independence of Western Sahara. "
In this regard, the Special Envoy of the AU called to effective implementation of the resolutions of the African Union on Western Sahara, inviting African countries to play a more active role in defending the Saharawi cause, according to the resolutions that appeal to guarantee the right of self-determination of the Saharawi people ".
Moreover, Mr. Chissano said that "the African Union will never be achieved until the Africans put the common interests of African on its priority".
From his part, the African Commissioner for Peace and Security in Africa, Mr. Ismail Chargui, "renewed the African position that the conflict in Western Sahara remains a question of decolonization".
The African responsible for peace and security "informed the members of the African Peace and Security on the results of the last visit of the Secretary General of the UN, Mr. Ban Ki Moon, and his contacts with him and the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in New York, mainly members of the Security Council".
"Before the meeting, the Commissioner for Peace and African Security conducted a working session with the Special Envoy of the AU to Western Sahara, Mr. Jaoquim Chissano, where they discussed the latest developments in the conflict and African efforts in the search for a solution, in order to coordinate their positions before the start of the sessions of the Security Council of the UN this weekend."
