Rome, July 19, 2011 (SPS) - The mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris, newly elected head of the municipality, asserted that he supported the struggle of the Saharawi people to self-determination, indicated Tuesday the Sahrawi diplomatic representative in Italy, Omar Mih.

South Sudan Releases Its New Currency

Juba, July 19, 2011 (SPS) - Newly independent South Sudan released its own currency today to banks in the capital, Juba, said Aggrey Tisa, undersecretary for planning in the Ministry of Finance.

It may take as long as two months before the South Sudan pound replaces the old currency the nation shared with Sudan before it gained independence on July 9, Tisa said in an interview. Sudanese President Umar al-Bashir announced on July 12 that his government decided also to print a new currency.

US Officials hold talks with Gaddafi's representatives

Tripoli, July 19, 2011(SPS )- US officials have met face-to-face with of Muammar Gaddafi's representatives - but the two sides disagree about what they discussed.

Libyan government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim told reporters in Tripoli the talks had been held on Saturday.

He refused to say exactly where they happened or which officials were involved, but said they had involved ways to repair ties between Tripoli and Washington.

The Americans said the reason for the meeting was to insist that Col Gaddafi leaves power.

German youth group called on its country to pressure Morocco for respecting human rights in Western Sahara

Berlin, July 18, 2011 (SPS) - In a letter to the German minister of foreign affair, the German youth group “project of Western Sahara” has called on the government of its country to exert pressure on Morocco to respect human rights in Western Sahara and to work for extending the mandate of MINURSO to include monitoring and report about human rights violations in the Territory.

“German y that chairs the UN Security Council this month has an opportunity to carry out initiatives consolidating human and peoples’ rights,” the letter said.

Thousands rally in Rabat to demand reforms

Rabat (Morocco) July 18, 2011 (SPS) - Nearly 1500 Moroccan protesters gathered Sunday in the Moroccan city, Rabat, to demand political and economic reforms in response to the call of the February 20 Movement, Moroccan media and websites reported Monday.

The Moroccan security forces prevented the protesters to gather outside the parliament headquarters.

Saharawi youth soccer team arrives in Sweden to participate in International Gothia Cup

Gothenburg (Sweden) July 18, 2011 (SPS) - Saharawi soccer team of youth arrived Sunday to the city of Gothenburg, Sweden, to participate in the International Youth Soccer Tournament (Gothia Cup), which annually organizes in Sweden, according to the Polisario Front representation in Sweden.

The Sahrawi football team, which is composed of 17 children and three adults, will play its first match in the Tournament against Norway team.

Barcelona, July 18, 2011 (SPS) - The activities of the study days on the struggle of the Saharawi woman held at the University of Barcelona shut down Saturday with the participation of Saharawi delegation led by Ms. Kahdija Hamdi, minister of culture in the Saharawi Republic.

The study days marked by the organization of a number of conferences for exchanging woman’s experiences, where Ms. Khadija Hamdi gave a lecture about the experience of the Saharawi woman in the political field.

Sudan says to circulate new currency this month

Khartoum, July 16, 2011 (SPS) - Sudan's central bank said on Saturday it would begin circulating a new currency this month after South Sudan said it planned to create a currency of its own.

South Sudan, which declared independence on July 9 under a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war, said on Monday it would begin circulating its previously announced South Sudan pound in the coming week, pegging it one-to-one with Sudan's existing pound .

United Nations (New York), July 16, 2011 (SPS) - The next round of preliminary negotiations between the Frente Polisario and Morocco, scheduled for 19 to 21 July, will discuss the issue of the electoral corps and mechanisms for self-determination,” according to the announcement issued Thursday by the UN.

“During the upcoming talks, the parties will, as previously agreed, further deepen their discussion of their respective proposals on a settlement, including the issue of the electoral corps and mechanisms for self-determination,” the statement asserted.

South Sudan becomes newest member of UN

United Nation, July 16, 2011 (SPS) - South Sudan became the newest member of the United Nations, as it was welcomed into the world's top club amid pledges to help one of the planet's poorest states take its first steps.

"I declare South Sudan a member of the United Nations," said Joseph Deiss, president of the UN General Assembly, after a vote by acclamation admitted the country as the UN's 193rd member.

"Welcome, South Sudan. Welcome to the community of nations," added UN chief Ban Ki-moon.

Polisario Front, Morocco to hold eighth informal meeting on July 20-21 in Manhasset

Washington, July 14, 2011 (SPS) - The eighth informal meeting between the Polisario Front and Morocco will take place on 20 and 21 July in Manhasset (near New York), Polisario Front’s representative to the United Nations Ahmed Boukhari told APS Wednesday.

This meeting will take place more than a month after the previous informal round, under the auspices of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, in the presence of delegations from both parties and representatives of the two observer countries, Algeria and Mauritania.
