Pan-African Parliament "strongly" condemns European Parliament's interference in Algeria's domestic affairs
Midrand, 27 January 2025 (SPS) - The Pan-African Parliament strongly condemned the European Parliament's interference in the internal affairs of Algeria, calling it a "violation" of the international charters guaranteeing the respect of the sovereignty of States and non-interference in their affairs.
In a statement, the African parliament "strongly condemned the European Parliament's resolution," calling it "unjustified interference in the domestic affairs of the sovereign state of Algeria" and "violation of international charters guaranteeing the sovereignty of States and non-interference in their affairs."
"The Algerian State, like the other African states, is an independent country with full sovereignty and its own institutions, laws and a judicial system, which must be respected by all, just as Algeria respects the sovereignty and the laws of the other states, in Europe and elsewhere," the statement said.
The Pan-African parliament expressed "full solidarity with the Algerian government and people," calling on the European Parliament "to refrain from any interference in internal affairs of African states" and "to respect the functioning of their institutions, particularly judicial institutions.
The Pan-African Parliament "deeply regretted that the European Parliament is in a hurry to issue resolutions without consulting its African counterpart, in contradiction with the agreement concluded between the two institutions in December 2022, stipulating the need to consult and exchange information before issuing resolutions relating to a country from the two continents."
