Morocco: Activist supporting Sahrawi people's right to self-determination detained

Submitted on

Rabat (Morocco), December 25, 2024 (SPS) – Moroccan security forces have detained human rights activist and politician Jawad Al-Hamidi in the city of Agadir, in the south of Morocco, due to his political positions and rejection of the occupation of Western Sahara by his country, along with his fight for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.

The detention of Jawad Al-Hamidi, who frequently publishes pamphlets on his social media page denouncing the colonial policies of the Moroccan regime's Majzen and affirming the legal status of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue, comes at a time when the support from free voices among Moroccan citizens publicly calling for respect of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination is growing.

Recently, the detained Moroccan activist posted on his social media that “the United Nations is the only entity with exclusive jurisdiction to resolve the Sahrawi issue and that Western Sahara and Morocco are two separate and distinct regions.”

Jawad Al-Hamidi also stated that “what Morocco claims is recognition by some countries of its (alleged) sovereignty over Western Sahara, are merely statements that are not recognized internationally and do not resonate in the Fourth Committee on Decolonization or in the UN Security Council.”
