Shaheed El-Hafed, October 3, 2024 (SPS) - President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, on Thursday afternoon received the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Mr. Staffan de Mistura, at his office at the presidency of the Republic.
The meeting was attended by the Polisario Front representative at the United Nations, coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, the advisor at the presidency in charge of media and the Arab world, Nana Labat Rachid, and de Mistura's aides.
In a statement to the Sahrawi Press Agency (SPS), the representative of the Polisario Front at the UN and coordinator with MINURSO, Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, mentioned that De Mistura visited the Sahrawi side on Thursday, starting with a tour of some facilities and establishments to assess the humanitarian situation of the Sahrawi refugees. He then held meetings with a group of women, youth, and locally and regionally elected executives, as well as a separate meeting with members of the National and Consultative Councils, and another with the Sahrawi leadership.
The Sahrawi official added that this visit aims to deepen communication between the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General and the two parties to the conflict: the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco, especially at a time when he will present a briefing to the Security Council on October 16, during which the council will discuss the Secretary-General's report and decide on the extension of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
He noted that the Sahrawi side confirmed to the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on the legal and international nature of the Western Sahara issue as a case of decolonization. The Sahrawi side reiterated its commitment to cooperate with the United Nations and the African Union to achieve a just and lasting solution to the conflict between the Sahrawi Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco, based on full respect for the principles and objectives of the foundational law of the African Union. At the same time, the Sahrawi side emphasized the unwavering rights of the Sahrawi people in exercising their inalienable and non-negotiable right to self-determination.
