The Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara to visit the Sahrawi Side

New York (United Nations), 30 September 2024 (SPS)- Ahead of the briefing that he is scheduled to present to the UN Security Council in mid-October, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Mr Staffan de Mistura, will visit the Sahrawi side on Thursday, 3 October 2024.

The visit will include meetings with the Sahrawi Leadership to discuss ways to relaunch the UN-sponsored peace process in Western Sahara, which is facing an impasse due to the obstructionism and intransigence of Morocco, the occupying state, and its continued violation of the ceasefire since 13 November 2020.

In the statement issued by the Fifth Session of its National Secretariat, the Frente POLISARIO affirmed that the UN-OAU Settlement Plan of 1991, which was accepted by the two parties to the conflict, the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco, and adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council, is the only practicable, realistic and compromise-based solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.

The Frente POLISARIO also underscored the responsibility of the United Nations and its Mission towards the exercise by the Sahrawi people of their right to self-determination, stressing that delaying and obstructing the realisation of that right would further threaten security and stability in the region.
