The Dean of the AU Northern African Region deposits the Moroccan Candidate’s File for the position of AU DCP

Addis Ababa (African Union) 04 August 2024 (SPS)- The Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Republic to the African Union, Amb. Lamin Baali, in his capacity as Dean of the North African Group, deposited the candidacy file for Morocco’s nominee for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. The elections for the leadership of the Union are scheduled to take place during the summit in February 2025.

The file was submitted Friday 3rd August to the Office of the Legal Counsel of the Union, represented by the Legal Counsel, Dr. Gajer Gueldich.

It is noteworthy that the Dean of the Northern region deposited the candidacy of the Algerian candidate to the same post last July 31st, while it is expected that the Northern African region will have more candidates whose candidatures are expected to be submitted by the Dean this coming week.

The upcoming elections will allow African countries to present candidates for the leadership positions within the Union. Specifically, the position of Chairperson of the Commission will be contested exclusively by Eastern African countries, while the Deputy Chair position is reserved for North African countries.

The remaining positions of the six AU Commissioners will be contested by candidates from the other countries of the remaining three regions of the African Union, with each region competing for two Commissioner posts. Additionally, it is worthy to mention that the Sahrawi Republic has held the position of Dean of the North African region for several years now. The region includes the Sahrawi Republic, Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Morocco. (SPS)
