Brasília, August 01, 2024 (SPS) - The Brazilian Association for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People condemned, in a statement, the illegal position of the French government that supports the Moroccan expansionist policy in Western Sahara.
In this context, the Brazilian association criticized the French government for distancing itself from international peace initiatives and the process of decolonization of Western Sahara, the last colony in Africa, noting that some countries with colonial tendencies do not respect legitimate rights, history, or even social and legal facts.
The association highlighted in its statement that "there are intensive efforts in the United Nations and in international courts seeking to find a just solution to the conflict in line with international law and UN resolutions, and to put an end to violence, oppression and division between Sahrawi families, as is the case with the wall of shame full of mines and explosives, which has divided lands and families together for decades”.
The association also stressed that "Paris' recent hostile position, through its illegal decision regarding Western Sahara, cuts off any friendly relationship with the Sahrawi people, and it is inconsistent with the supreme values that France boasts about, the values of freedom, equality and brotherhood that led to the establishment of the First French Republic."
The statement added that "the French government's support for the Moroccan policy of expansion and annexation of Sahrawi lands directly implicates it and links it to all the colonial crimes against democracy committed by the Moroccan Kingdom against the Sahrawi people.
The Brazilian Association expressed its support for the position of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic calling for the immediate withdrawal of France from the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
