Macron's position on Western Sahara is pro-colonial and unbecoming of France

Paris, August 01, 2024 (SPS) - The French Communist Party (PC) MP, Jean-Paul Lecoq, denounced the decision of French President Emmanuel Macron to support "Morocco's alleged 'autonomy' plan in Western Sahara", stressing that his pro-colonial position is unbecoming of France.

In a letter addressed to the French President, the MP confirmed that he informed him "that his pro-colonial position is unbecoming of our country, but rather distorts France's image in the world and destroys our democracy", adding that he called on the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, via a letter, to respond on behalf of Parliament, so that international law is respected.

The MP and member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the French Parliament added, "Based on my concern for respecting human dignity, international law and the image of France, I denounce this position taken by the President of the Republic, which is inconsistent with the United Nations Charter, especially in its part related to the principle of the right of peoples to self-determination".

The same speaker considered that "this political decision is completely inconsistent with international law", especially since France was at the same distance in its relationship with Morocco and Western Sahara.

He also regretted saying: "While the international process of decolonization in the twentieth century aimed to liberate countries and make them completely independent, it is clear that the situation is completely different."
