Geneva hosts a symposium in solidarity with the Sahrawi issue

Geneva (Switzerland), June 19, 2024 (SPS) – The Geneva Support Group for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights in Western Sahara organized a symposium in solidarity with the Sahrawi issue on Wednesday, at the headquarters of the UN Human Rights Council.

The symposium was moderated by the Representative of the Polisario Front, in the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva Mr. Oubi Bouchraya Al-Bashir, Representative of Namibia in Geneva and Rotating President of the Solidarity Group with the Sahrawi People in Geneva, Julia Imene-Chanduru, Mr. Pierre Galon, President of the European Coordination for the Support and Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, in addition to important figures from different countries.

The high-level symposium, organized by the Geneva Support Group, addressed the confiscation of the right to self-determination and its impact on human rights, the case of Western Sahara.

The speakers addressed the reality of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and the serious violations committed by the Moroccan occupying state against unarmed Sahrawi activists.

They also discussed in depth the legal aspect of the Sahrawi issue and the importance of finding mechanisms to protect human rights defenders and the link between it and the application of the right to self-determination and independence as the only solution to decolonization issues.

The participants called on the European Union to put conscience and truth above interests and to stop plundering the wealth of the Sahrawis, renewing the support of their governments and peoples for the sovereignty of the Sahrawi people over their land and wealth, considering them the owners of the right and the land.

It is worth noting that the high-level symposium, which was held on the sidelines of the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, was attended by diplomats, led by the Algerian Ambassador In Geneva, delegates from several countries in the United Nations Organizations in Switzerland, representatives of international organizations, a human rights delegation from the occupied territories, in addition to those in solidarity with the struggle of the Sahrawi people from various countries.
