New York (United Nations), June 15, 2024 (SPS) - Moroccan citizens Mohamed Hisham Radoui, Ahmed Fennan and Hassan Fennan, as human rights activists and Moroccan citizens, affirmed their support and backing for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, freedom and independence.
These explicit positions were announced in the statements they made before the substantive session of the Special Committee on the Situation with Regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (Committee of 24), which began its work on Monday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The speakers recalled the beginning of the Moroccan military invasion of Western Sahara within the framework of the so-called "Black March" and the subsequent subjection of the Sahrawis to the worst forms of psychological and physical torture, as well as the Moroccan regime's ongoing attempt to erase the Sahrawi culture and impose an alien culture in the occupied Sahrawi territories.
The speakers detailed the human rights situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories and the serious human rights violations committed by the Moroccan state against Sahrawi activists and the unfair trials and the miserable conditions experienced by Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan prisons, where they are subjected to all kinds of retaliation that even extends to their relatives.
The speakers considered the forced disappearance operations carried out by the Moroccan repression apparatus against Sahrawi activists and Moroccan political opponents alike as a crime against humanity that deserves full condemnation, stressing that the Moroccan regime remains a colonial, expansionist, occupying and usurping state.
