Montevideo (Uruguay), April 12, 2024 (SPS) - Emiliano Gómez López passed away on Thursday in the city of Montevideo. He was a man who dedicated a significant part of his life to the struggle for the freedom and independence of the Sahrawi people.
Since the early 1980s, he began an important task of raising awareness about the Sahrawi people's cause and their struggle for liberation in the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, as well as in Argentina and Brazil.
His commendable work in disseminating information through lectures, writing books, and his representation of the POLISARIO Front in various political, intellectual, and social circles made him a reference in the region and an expert on the Sahrawi issue from a historical and international law perspective.
He served as the President of the Uruguayan Association of Friendship with the Sahrawi Republic and worked tirelessly to bring the voice of the Sahrawi people to different departments of Uruguay. He also dedicated himself entirely to the Sahrawi cause in Argentina and Brazil, where he participated in various congresses and conferences, always advocating for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
Recently, President Brahim Gali of the Sahrawi Republic, in recognition and gratitude for his support and solidarity with the Sahrawi people's struggle, granted him Sahrawi citizenship.
